Meet Lumicente — Identify Any Movie from a Short Clip

One cozy weekend day, I was just relaxing and watching a beautiful sunset—which is quite a rare occasion where I live during winter. Or maybe it’s not that rare, but I do not go out often (especially on -30), so who knows 😄

Usually, at times like this, I lie down on the couch and spend time on Instagram or TikTok. Many people think doomscrolling is a bad thing, but if it is controlled, it can actually help you understand current trends and even give you some inspiration. I believe that spending a small amount of time on social networks won’t harm you and might even provide valuable insights.

So, here is the thing. I am really into movies, and the Instagram & TikTok algorithms clearly know that. They keep showing me short clips from movies. Sometimes, the creators post these clips with captions like: “Want to know the movie name? Subscribe and do a double backflip on camera and send it to me.” (okay, maybe not exactly that, but you get the idea 😄).

It got really annoying not being able to find the movie name and watch it later. I also noticed tons of people asking for the movie title in the comments. That is when it clicked - I might actually be able to help solve this. So instead of just doomscrolling, I decided to build something right away.

That’s how I came up with Lumicente. While you can try uploading screenshots into ChatGPT, it is often not very precise, and sometimes it will not give you an answer at all. I am not saying Lumicente is perfect, no, it is still a prototype. However, early tests show that it can identify movies from Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube links fairly well. I decided to launch it anyway, and I will keep improving it over time.
