From Movie Finder to Social Connections?

From Movie Finder to Social Connections?

Last week, I shared a project I have been working on — Lumicente.

The idea is simple: help people quickly identify movies they come across online, without digging through endless comments (sometimes comments might not contain the movie title).

Now I am trying to validate something more important: Do people actually need this? Will they use it consistently? Does it genuinely make finding movie information easier?

So far, a few hundred people have already tried it. It is an encouraging start, but still early to draw conclusions.

Regardless of how this evolves, I decided on one thing: I will document the entire process.

I am planning to create a short YouTube course and a detailed write-up explaining how the product was built in a way that is accessible for beginners in programming. No unnecessary complexity, just practical insights.

There is also an interesting direction I have been thinking about: Could shared movie preferences be used to connect people?

For instance, building a dating or friendship platform based on taste in movies — as a proxy for worldview and personality. In many cases, what people watch says more about them than what they say.

Curious to hear your thoughts: Would you use something like this?

Hm, although Netflix could easily add such functionality, right?

Anyways guys you are always welcome to share your comments.

And Happy Friday and good luck 🍀
